Walter John Riley, also known as Jack, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at the age of 86 at his home in Alger, MI. Born on July 6, 1937, in Oxford, MI, he was the son of Roger and Lucille (Shick) Riley.
He served in the Navy on the US Beatty from 1954 to 1958, proudly contributing to his country during the Korean War.
Following his military service, Jack’s educational journey led him to obtain an associate degree from Oakland Community College. He embarked on a fulfilling career. In 1968, he joined the Oakland County Sheriff Department, where he dedicated himself to protecting and serving his community. During his time with the Sheriff Department, Jack was part of the Oakland County Honor Guard and Oakland County Search and Rescue Dive Team. He retired as a sergeant after 27 years of service.
Outside of his professional life, Jack had a wide range of hobbies that brought him joy. He was an avid guitar player and music enthusiast. He also found solace in wood carving, painting, working on mechanics and fixing things. Additionally, he had a passion for remote model airplanes. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Jack was a member of the Edwards Community Church in West Branch, MI.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Gaynol (Denman) Riley of Alger. He will be deeply missed by his sons, John (Jan) Riley and Randy (Lisa) Riley, and his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth Schleicher, Destiny Riley, Derek (Heather) Riley, Owen (Nicole) Riley, and Colton Riley. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Charlie and Juliet Schleicher and survived by his sister, Lori Christian.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers Bill, Ron, and Don, and his sisters Wanda Smith and Patricia Covill.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch, starting on Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Edwards Community Church, 4586 Greenwood Road, West Branch on Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Jon Scott will officiate.
Jack will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to Edwards Community Church.
