Vivian Jean Mellon, age 95, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at her home in Lupton, MI. She was born in Grand Rapids, MI to Charles and Eva Byce on June 22, 1922. The family moved to Deckerville, near Lupton in 1923. Vivian attended elementary school in Lupton and graduated from Union High School in Grand Rapids in 1939. She attended County Normal and received a teaching certificate in 1940. Her first teaching assignment was in Prescott, MI where she taught for two years. Vivian then taught at the South Branch School for a year. She married John Mellon in the Lupton Friends Church in 1943. Her first child, Ron, was born in 1945 followed by Donna in 1948 and Doris in 1950. Vivian resumed her teaching career in 1963 teaching 4th grade at the Rose City Elementary School and obtained a degree from Central Michigan University. Vivian retired from teaching in 1988. A tireless reader, Vivian is a perfect example of the benefits of lifelong education.
Vivian was a devoted member of the Lupton Friends Church, teaching Sunday School and serving on the Administrative Council. She provided educational training for those who were interested in church membership. Her artistic talents continue on display through the many banners she produced for the sanctuary. Vivian’s support for missions through the church was a hallmark of her life.
Vivian and her husband, John, of 73 years traveled widely after their retirement. Their travels included destinations throughout the United States and Canada including Alaska and Hawaii as well as travels in Brazil, Jamaica and the Orient.
Vivian is survived by her sister, Margaret Snyder, her children, Ron Mellon, Donna Stoddard, and Doris Hall as well as by grandchildren, Jeffrey, James, Aaron, Mark and Ellen. She has seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, John in 2016.
Vivian will be honored at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in Rose City, MI on Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Lupton Friends Church at 11:00 am on Friday, October 13, 2017 with visitation starting at 10:00 am. A brief internment service at the Lane Heights Cemetery and a celebration of her life at the Rose Township Hall in Lupton will follow the funeral service.
Those wishing to remember Vivian with contributions are encouraged to contribute to a fund established in her name at the Lupton Friends Church.
