Vencina Bostic (née Scalf) passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019 at The Villa at West Branch. She was born on May 12, 1929 in Harlan, Kentucky to Clinton Cambell Scalf and Naomi Scalf (née Hensley). Vencina's father was a coal miner. After her mother died when she was 11 years old, she helped raise her three younger siblings: Audrey, Bobby Earl, and Cathrine.
At 17, Vencina married Hobert Edward Bostic of La Follette, Tennessee. They raised six children: Patricia, Bobbie Jo, Diane, Glen Edward (Eddie), Debra, and Janet. The family later settled in Detroit, Michigan, where Hobert worked as a high-rise iron worker.
Vencina eventually moved with her family to the West Branch, Michigan area, where she remained for the rest of her life. Her husband passed in 1981.
Vencina was a strong woman who loved her children and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom lovingly referred to her has Mammaw. She enjoyed growing flowers and nurturing houseplants. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family and collecting porcelain dolls.
Vencina is survived by daughters, Patricia Bostic, Bobbie Jo Fox (husband Bernie Fox), Diane Eggmann (husband Kim Eggmann), Debra Sue Bastedo (husband Kim Bastedo), and Janet Murchie (husband Duane Murchie). She is also survived by sister, Catherine (Cat) and her grandchildren, Mark Fox, Amy Geise, Beth Strauss, James Martin, Jennifer Cahill, Joey Martin, Scott Bastedo, Bridgette Bostic, Brianna Miller, John Murchie, Brian Murchie, and Haley Murchie, along with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Vencina was preceded in death by two still-born children and son Glen Edward (Eddie) Bostic in 2006. She was also preceded in death by sister, Audrey (June) and brother, Bobby.
Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Ogemaw Springs Cemetery.
