Salvatore “Sam” Cappello, age 66, peacefully departed this life to be with his Father and Lord, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at his winter home in Ft. Pierce, Florida with his wife Nancy at his side after a valiant fight with brain cancer. Sam leaves behind many faithful customers, managers and employees of the 5 Big Boy Restaurants that he successfully managed and owned. He started with Big Boy in 1974 with his most recent location in Bay City, MI. Sam was an active humanitarian and supported many charities, but he especially loved the Salvation Army. They honored Sam in 2008 as an outstanding contributor at a surprise luncheon in West Branch. Sam holds the Keys to the City of Bay City, MI. Sam enjoyed all sports and was a sportsman himself. He was an outstanding golfer and card player and enjoyed those things with his friends. He kept himself in top physical shape by practicing good eating habits and running through the Clear Lake area with friends while at his summer home in West Branch. Sam was known for his welcoming smile and for the many hugs and handshakes which he gave out freely. Sam is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 48 years, Nancy (Biggs) Cappello of West Branch, children, Cynthia Cappello of Hinsdale, IL and Salvatore “Sam” (Melanie) Cappello of Bloomfield Hills. Sam was a model grandfather to 6 grandchildren and they were the lights of his life. Zachary (Zach) Williams, Alexandra (Allie) Williams, Jack Williams, Laine Williams, Samantha Cappello and Dominic Cappello who will always cherish their beloved “Papa” who made such a difference in their lives. Sam is survived by 6 brothers and sisters, Enrico “Rico” (Karen) Cappello and family, Mario Cappello and family, Adelle (Carmen) Fallone and family, Maria (John) LaRosa and family, Georgina “Flora”(Laura) Cappello and Antonette “Toni” (Frank) Buscemi and family, brothers in law, Raymond (Judith) Biggs of Grosse Pointe, MI and Dr. Thomas Biggs of West Branch, MI. his uncle, Renato (Olga) Fargnioli of Clinton Township and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant son John Raymond, his sister, Clara Cappello and his parents Giovanni and Giovanna Cappello. Visistation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010 from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Branch. Fr. Patrick Maher will officiate. Entombment will take place at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. Sam loved flowers but he would also appreciate any memorial to be given to the Michigan State University-Raymond Biggs Scholarship, M.O.C.F, (Michigan Osteopathic College Fund), to the Hospice Foundation, the Salvation Army, the West Branch Country Club for a memorial tree to be planted on the golf course or to the University of Michigan, Brain Tumor Research Fund.
