Robert A. Brewer, affectionately known as Bob, passed away at the age of 84 on Monday, July 8, 2024, at his home in West Branch, MI surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 15, 1940, in West Branch, to Lester and Evelyn Brewer. Bob's life was characterized by hard work and dedication to his family, farm and business.
Bob’s journey in the workforce began in 1959 when he started laying blocks and later joined forces with Doc Nelson to establish Nelson Oil Company. Their collaboration led to the creation of gas stations spanning from Bay City to the majestic Mackinaw Bridge. Bob's commitment to his work and entrepreneurial spirit left an indelible mark on the local landscape. He also drilled, owned and successfully operated several oil wells near West Branch. When speaking about his life one time, Bob said “It’s been a good run”.
In his formative years, Bob attended Stillwagon School before transitioning to West Branch High School. A natural athlete, he excelled in football and was honored with the title of team captain and Most Valuable Player during his senior year. Not one to shy away from new experiences, Bob even joined the ski team as a clever way to skip study hall.
Bob's upbringing on the family farm alongside his eight siblings instilled in him values of hard work and resilience. He demonstrated his mechanical aptitude early on by tinkering with machinery and he mastered the art of putting things back together.
His memory will be cherished by his surviving family, including his devoted wife Karen; children James (Lori) Brewer, Debora (Dave) Graham, and Daniel (Deanna) Brewer; grandchildren Kari (Khefren) Brewer Savannah, Kimberly (Greg) Farrer, Mandy Brewer, Melanie Brewer, McKinley Brewer, and Adam (Makenzie) Brewer; great-grandchildren Iva, Evelyn, and Kaiden; siblings Ray (Sandy) Brewer, Doug (Myrna) Brewer, Clara (Joe) Clark; Greg (Vicki) Brewer; Andy (Elaine) Brewer; sister-in-law Barb Brewer; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
