Phyllis Lynn Allison, age 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at her home in Rose City with her family by her side. She was born on August 25, 1938 in Detroit to Francis and Phyllis (Zdan) Granger.
Phyllis held a Bachelor of Science Degree in English and Fine Arts and a Masters of Arts Degree in Counseling, as well as a Ph.D. from the “School of Life” as she would say.
Originally from Walnut Lake, Birmingham, MI, she moved to Lupton in the fall of 1969 with her three children to her father’s farm (Dr. F.L. Granger) to start her teaching career. One May 6, 1972 she married James Alfred Allison and their 47 year life together began. In 1983, they moved to Rose Township area to the home they built.
Through Lynn’s 30 plus years of teaching at Rose City Schools, she taught 3rd grade, 8th grade English, 1st – 4th grade Art/Music/PE and was a Guidance Counselor. She also created the Gifted and Talented Youth Program.
Once Retired from WBRC School District, she went on to teach at Baker College as well as started her own tutoring business. She also obtained her certificate for scotopic sensitivity testing so she could help those with Irlen Syndrome Visual Dyslexia.
In addition to her teaching career, she also owned and operated her own business, “The Record Hole” for many years as well as taught piano lessons. She served on the Ogemaw District Library Board for over 10 years, enjoyed being a member of the Community Playhouse Players and performing in the plays as well as playing the banjo in a folk band at one time in her life. She very much enjoyed when she got to play the banjo, guitar, and harmonica with family at reunions and play the piano at the Northwoods Baptist Church. She has played piano since 3 years old and played such an array of music beautifully.
She enjoyed music, reading, ancestry research, traveling, computer online games, playing the banjo, guitar, piano and harmonica, gardening, bird watching, collecting hippos, photography, painting, drawing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, needlework, counted cross stitch, sewing and Red Wings Hockey to name a few of the many interests she had.
Phyllis Lynn Allison was loved and admired by many. She will be greatly missed by her husband, children, brothers, grandchildren, cousins, friends, former colleagues, and many former students who have kept in in contact with her through the years. She took great pride in all of her life accomplishments.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, James Allison; children, Jeffery Allison, Steven (Peggy) Allison and Vicki Smith; grandchildren, Ashley (Tyler), Claire, Clayton, Carson and Maxwell; brothers, David (Beverly) Granger and Raymond Granger; nephew, Adam; and niece, Katie. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. F.L. Granger and Phyllis Granger and infant grandson, Cole.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ogemaw District Library in her honor.
A memorial service will be held at a later time.
