Michael James Cox

September 25, 1945 — October 25, 2023

Michael James Cox, age 78, a passionate outdoorsman, veteran, and loving family man went home to the Lord on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw, MI. He was born on September 25, 1945, in Saginaw to Clyde and Esther (Reinke) Cox. Michael's life was filled with service to his country, devotion to his family, and a deep love for the great outdoors.

After finishing school, he worked until he was able to enlist in the Army. He served for two years, stationed in Korea in the 7th calvary during the Vietnam War. He was recently recognized with the Purple Heart, an honor he received posthumously for his brother Bill. Upon his return, he began a career as a sheet metal welder for Local 85, a job he performed with dedication and skill.

In 1970, Michael married the love of his life, Roxann. Together, they raised their family in Saginaw.

In 1995, Michael and Roxann moved to St. Helen, Michigan, where they enjoyed the peace and beauty of nature. An avid outdoorsman, Michael loved hunting, fishing, and camping. He was especially fond of traveling on his Honda Goldwing, exploring the country's landscapes. His appreciation for nature was only matched by his passion for history, particularly war history. Michael was a history buff who loved watching war documentaries and was known for his extensive knowledge on the subject.

Michael was a man of many passions, but he was particularly committed to advocating for veterans. His experiences in the Army made him a staunch supporter of veterans' rights, and he dedicated much of his time and effort in helping those who had served their country.

He is survived by his son Chad (Jennifer) Cox of Prudenville, MI, and daughter Julie (Brad) Henderson of St. Helen. Michael was a doting grandfather to Destani Cox, Allison (Calvin) Trudgeon, Jacob Wilson, Austin Cox, Benjerman Wilson, Kyleigh Cox, Ty Wilson, and Ethan Cox, and a loving great-grandfather to Jhorie, Brantley, Ryder, Alivia, and Rowen. Also surviving is his sister, Patricia (Allan) Bader of Kochville, MI, and beloved harrier hound, Annie.

He is preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Roxann in 2015, brothers Ken, Bill, “Bud” Clyde, and sisters Carol and Maxine.

A man of great courage, warmth, and integrity, Michael James Cox will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to his values, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. His spirit will live on in the woods and waters he loved so much, in the history books he devoured, and in the family he cherished.

Visitation will begin at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in St. Helen on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery with military honors.
