Lisa R. Hammond, age 44, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland, MI due to a short illness from complications of a severe anoxic brain injury suffered in 1996. Lisa was born to Terry and Sharon Hammond on May 29, 1970 in West Branch, MI. She has lived in Midland since 2000, formerly of West Branch. Lisa graduated from OHHS in 1988 with honors and near the top of her class. She was involved with the National Honor Society and Student Council while she was in high school. Lisa graduated from U of M and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree, with an English Major in 1992. She had a poetry book “Crazy Hunger” published in the 1990’s, and was invited to the National Poetry Slam in Asheville, NC. Lisa attended Naropa University in Boulder, CO for her Master’s Degree studying at the Jack Kerouac School for MFA Creative Writing and Poetics. For the past 14 years, Lisa has been a resident of Deer Run Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center in Midland, MI. Lisa enjoyed music, painting, poetry, and was very artistic.
Lisa is survived by her parents, Terry and Sharon Hammond of West Branch; sister, Lori (Doug) Koenig of Germantown Hills, IL; nephews, Kyle and Jake; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with visitation starting at 12:00 p.m. Elder Kevin White will officiate.
