Leon Douglas Winter

Leon Winter, Age 84, passed away on Monday, August 9, 2021 in West Branch, MI.

He was born in December 1936 to Joseph and Norma Winter, one of their 16 children.

Leon worked for the Ogemaw County Sheriff's Department for 26 years as the Animal Control Officer, as well as many years as a construction worker. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, hunting, fishing, singing, playing the guitar and banjo, gardening, and was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. He was inducted in the Great Lakes Country Music Hall of Fame, and performed for audiences around Michigan and the United States both with his brother, and as a member of the Honeybee Stingers.

Leon is survived by his wife of 64 years Joyce Winter; children, Kris Winter, Amy Winter, Rose (Mark) Antcliffe, Douglas Winter, and Brenda (Tracy) Zimmer; grandchildren, Katie Winter, Lucas (Samantha) Winter, Taylor Zimmer, and Jody Zimmer; great grandchildren, Jacob Winter, Mackenzie Winter, and Carson McKelvey; siblings, Joseph (Delores) Winter, Barbara Borg; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Fred Winter; siblings, Ruth (Charlie) Perry, Virginia Cunnington, Florentina (Burt) Gillies, Marie Winter, Calvin (Irma Jean) Winter, Iola Winter, Ervin Winter, Wanda Winter, William (Rita) Winter, Ladonna (James) Connolly, Marion Mettie, Stanley Winter, Dennis Winter, and his brother in law Carl Borg Sr.

Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will be held on Monday, August 16, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. and rosary at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Father Emmanuel Finbarr will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family.
