John H. "Jack" Rice

John H. “Jack” Rice, also known as the preaching lumberjack, age 78, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Bortz Health Care in Rose City. Jack was born in West Branch December 31, 1934 to Harold and Bessie (Colegrove) Rice. He had lived in Rose City for all of his life. Jack was a member and past pastor of Lupton Friends Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He also owned and operated a sawmill and logging business. Jack is survived by his wife Madeline of Rose City, children Betty (Paul) Goodwin of Massachusetts, Cheryl (Cliff) Gamber of Roscommon and Roger (Kimberly) Rice of Rose City, 7 grandchildren, Nathan Goodwin, Matthew Goodwin, Katie Goodwin, Casey Gamber, Cameron Gamber, Charlotte Landry, Hannah Rice and 3 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Don (Eva) Rice and Duane (Carol) Rice both of Ohio and his sister-in-law Pat (Keith) Yost of West Branch. He was preceded in death by his brother Roger Rice and his parents. Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in Rose City will begin on Sunday, June 23, 2013 from 3-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Lupton Friends Church. Mel Killinger will officiate with burial following at Lane Heights Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Lupton Friends Church.
