James Russell Hughes, Jr.
(June 7, 1941 - July 16, 2024)
James Russell Hughes, Jr., also known as Brother J.R. and also known as Russ, passed away this 16th day of July, 2024 A.D.
Brother J.R. Hughes was known locally as the Bible Believing Attorney, but he was also a missionary evangelist and anointed teacher, author for many years of the weekly email devotional Good GODly Sunday Morning.
Brother Hughes was the son of Alcona County Probate Judge James Russell Hughes, Sr., and Margaret Gertrude Violet Woods Hughes. He was their oldest child and he followed in his father’s footsteps in the practice of law. Licensed and accepted by the Michigan State Bar Association in 1968, when Brother Hughes was first admitted to practice law, he was working for the firm of Munstock and Richardson in Detroit, MI. In his first two years of practice, he achieved an 85% success ratio. Brother Hughes was known for his civil rights work and began to represent churches in free speech petition and assembly matters with great success in the courtrooms. He was admitted to practice before the US and Michigan Supreme Courts, the Federal District courts; state circuit courts, district courts and probate courts. He was even experienced in criminal cases, was also a circuit court arbitrator received appointments as a probate court referee and was often assigned cases where the court personnel wanted the assigned client to have their rights protected and have a favorable outcome.
Prior to the practice of law, Brother Hughes had additional experience in the worlds of insurance, education and real estate. He had been published in the American Bar Association Insurance Journal, as well as by the Michigan Litigation Section.
But Brother Hughes was a devout believer in Jesus Christ. He had spoken from various pulpits on Creation, evangelism and how to be right with God. Brother Hughes is now in the presence of Jesus in Heaven, and more than anything else, he wants you to join him there. To do this, you must realize that God loves you. You must then accept the fact that, just as every other human being, you have done things that you knew were wrong yet did them anyway - The Bible calls that “sin.” Sin separates you from God and His plan for your life, but never from His love. That’s why God sent His only begotten Son Jesus to come to earth, live a sinless life and pay the eternal death penalty your sins had earned you. If you will receive Him into your heart and life, you will one day join Brother Hughes in Heaven forever.
Brother Hughes leaves behind his dear wife of 15 years, Sister Lillian Hughes, who is now heartbroken but looking forward to joining her beloved husband one day in Heaven.
