Gladys Barbara Nixon, age 96, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at The Brook in West Branch, MI. She was born on September 23, 1921 in Bay City, MI to William and Barbara (Beeckman) Erno. Gladys was orphaned at the age of 15 and with the help of her brother, they ran the family farm in Bay City. She then later moved with her husband and children in 1946 and farmed in AuGres, MI. Gladys was on the school board in AuGres and the town librarian for a time. She was on the Arenac Planning Commission and a member of the AuGres Garden Club. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, playing shuffle board and pinochle. Gladys was very active in the community and always provided a helping hand when it was needed. She was active in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in AuGres and later in the Lutheran church in Deland, FL. She wintered in Deland, FL for many years, finally making it her year around home.
Gladys is survived by her children, Dennis (Elizabeth nee Scanlan) Nixon of AuGres, Richard (Jean nee Clair) Nixon of Turner, Bill Nixon of AuGres , and David (Barbara nee Schmidt); significant other, Milt Wordelman of Deland, FL; grandchildren, Jim Nixon of FL, Troy Nixon of AuGres, Leslie Nixon Bettega of FL, Jennifer Nixon Boehme of NC, Sarah Nixon Walter of Fowlerville, Ben Nixon of AuGres, Tom Nixon of AuGres, Justin Nixon of AuGres, Ryan Nixon of AuGres, Amanda Nixon Makela of TX,and Kora Nixon; 15 great grandchildren; and sister, Mildred Badgley. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Thomas “Tom”, son, John Nixon; brother, Elmer Erno; and daughter in law, Linda Bishop Nixon.
A memorial service will be held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in AuGres on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at later date at the Whitney Sims Cemetery in AuGres.
