Gary Owen Sheply

Gary Owen Sheply peacefully reached out and took the hand of Jesus on December 4, 2021. His loving wife Dalene and family were by his bedside at his home in Whittemore. Dalene was Gary’s caregiver, giving back the same love and compassion that they, as a team, gave to Gary’s mother, brother, and Aunt at the end of their lives.

Gary had a gentle and loving spirit. He was known as being a prankster who loved to see people laugh. Many of his co-workers wanted to return those pranks and at the end of his career they did get the last laugh.

Gary lived a fulfilling life as a humble and loving husband and father who had a successful career serving and protecting as a trooper and detective sergeant with the Michigan State Police.

Gary enjoyed fishing and hunting in the Great Outdoors with his sons and good friends.

Gary is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dalene; three children, Dale Sheply (Phyllis Thomas), Steve Sheply, and Rhonda Harris; four grandchildren, Ashley (Daniel) Adam, Samantha (Mark) Pewarchie, Drew Michael Harris, and Sarah (Kevin) Zainea; 4 great-grandchildren, Bentley and Jasper Pewarchie, Cecilia Adam, and Ari Lee Zainea; and many nieces and nephews, all whom he loved to tease. Gary’s family was the pride and joy of his life.

Gary was born in Rose City, MI on March 10, 1936 and was preceded in death by his parents George and Mildred Sheply, siblings Ivan Sheply and Colleen Woelke.

Per Gary’s wishes, a cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for the family.

Dalene and family would like to thank friends and the MSP family for their love and support throughout the years.

Because God only sends His best, Gary and his family were Blessed to have had Hospice Compassus of West Branch and other Angels giving loving care during Gary's final days.
