Mr. McDermand, age 78 of St. Helen passed away December 27, 2003 at Veterans Medical Center in Ann Arbor. Mr. McDermand has been a resident of St. Helen for the past 17 years, formerly of Dearborn. He served as the Roscommon County Veterans Counselor, a member of the Veterans Affairs Trust Fund and the American Legion Post #416 and served as Chaplain and Commander three times. He was the current Post Adjutant for Post #416 and the American Legion 10th District Service Officer. He was also the advisor for Boy Scout Troop #980 of St. Helen. Mr. McDermand is survived by his wife of 31 years, Florence McDermand of St. Helen, daughters--Aneta (Robert) Pankow of Canton and Debra (Joseph) Grech of Davisburg, grandchildren--Diane, Dana, Duane, Deron, Scott, David, Paula, Joseph Sr., Anthony and Katelin and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Florence Owczarzak, Jesse Bumgarner and Carol Cox and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter Joan Balogh. Visitation will begin Tuesday December 30, 2003 at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in St. Helen from 2:30-9:00 P.M. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday December 31, 2003 at St. Helen Catholic Church in St. Helen. Fr. Albert Couturier will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, St. Helen. Memorial Contributions may be made to the family.
