Frances Genevra Smith Gould of West Branch, passed away Monday, August 9, 2004, at home, surrounded by her family. She was born October 13, 1909 in Caro, MI, the daughter of Clara and Henry Smith and the pioneer Spaulding family. She was of Quaker heritage from Millville, PA where she visited often. In the 1930’s she attended County Normal and Eastern Michigan University and taught in a one-room schoolhouse and second grade in Caro. On July 31,1937 Frances married Edward F. Gould and together they moved to West Branch. She scripted and hosted a live radio show, “This is Michigan,” from WBCM with her sister, Nathalie Smith and Helen Flajole of Bay City. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of West Branch, Ogemaw Historical Society, Tolfree Hospital Auxiliary, West Branch Country Club Golf League, and most recently the West Branch and Scottsdale, AZ Questers International. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Nathalie Smith and Emma Lou Goodall of Caro. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Edward F. Gould, daughters, Genevra Fox (Jim), of Paradise Valley, AZ, Diane Cooper (Doug), Carmichael, CA, Sylvia Blount of Tucson, AZ, six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, her niece Elaine DuRussel (Gordon) of Caro, and many relatives from the Gould family of St. Charles. Services will be Sunday, August 15, 1 PM, at the West Branch First United Methodist Church.
