Erwin (Karl) Kihn

June 14, 1927 — March 22, 2006

Erwin (Karl) Kihn passed away at his home in the woods in West Branch on Wednesday March 22, 2006 at the age of 78. He was born in Alpena to Carl and Alice (Kluge) Kihn on June 14, 1927. He grew up on a farm in Hillman. He served in the Army Corp of Engineers, 1950-52 during the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he joined the Operating Engineers Local 324 as a heavy equipment operator in the Detroit area. He loved diesel equipment, road construction and underground work. He married Elfrieda Klann at St. John Lutheran church in Hillman on May 29, 1954. She survives him. Following retirement, he moved from Livonia to the woods in West Branch. He enjoyed camping, old tractors, being in his woods and his family and friends. Also surviving are children Ellen Stawara of Tennessee, son Eugene (Vicky) of Howell and Kevin (Vikki) of Livonia. Grandchildren include Christopher and Jennifer (Mike), Jason (Robin) and Emily, Nicholas and Courtney, and Brenden. Son Eric and brothers Edgar and Elmer preceded him. Surviving siblings are Elaine MacFadyen of Calfornia, Edna Lancaster of Grand Rapids, Harry Kihn of Charlotte and Elden Kihn of Lachine. Funeral Services at St. John Lutheran Church in West Branch at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2006. Pastors Rudiger and Gruenhagen officiating. Viewing at the church will begin at noon prior to the services. Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2006 from 2-9 p.m. Cremation will follow.
