Donald Martella, 74, of Alger, Michigan formerly of Redford, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on July 7, 1948, in Detroit, MI to Walter and Helen (Hobbs) Martella.
Don or Donnie as he was called by many. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who did two years in Vietnam in 1969-1971.
He worked for Tri-Pen Oil, then for Rowley’s Oil as an oil tanker and boxed truck driver for several years until his retirement to his favorite place, his cabin in Alger, Michigan in 1998. He loved being out on his boat on Lake Ogemaw at the sand bar and tubing down the Rifle River with all his friends and family.
Don was a member of the American Legion Post #370 in Skidway Lake, Michigan and loved their Friday night fish and chicken dinners along with seeing everyone he had made friends with. He enjoyed bowling, baseball, and was on several leagues throughout his years.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Helen (Hobbs), and grandparents.
He Is survived by his wife Janice, brother Richard Martella (Anne), children Barbara Wood (Robert), Jennifer Donahue (Scott), Nichole Monet (Dan), Kristen Murphy (Dave) and Jerry Mastrofrancesco (Cindy), 12 grandchildren and one great grandson, several nieces and nephews all that he loved dearly.
Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Friday, July 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service, with veteran honors, at 1:00 p.m. Chaplain Richard Martella will officiate.
