Clifford Lewis Bortle, age 85, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at his daughter’s home in West Branch, MI surrounded by his family. He was born on January 11, 1938, in Hale, MI to Edward and Viola (Brown) Bortle. He was born and raised in Ogemaw County at the corner of M-55 and Sage Lake Rd.
Jake served in the United States Marine Corps.
He was a self-employed diesel mechanic for 10 years before taking a job at the West Branch Rose City Bus Garage as a mechanic. He retired from the bus garage after 16 years of employment.
Jake was a member of the Pioneer Power Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club in West Branch. He drove his tractor across the Mackinac Bridge multiple times and participated in the local parades. He enjoyed old tractors, NASCAR, and woodworking.
Jake is survived by his loving wife Sondra Bortle; children Connie Bortle of Flint, MI, Rebecca Goward of Millington, Gary (Karen) Bortle of Gillette, WY, Cheryl (Larry) Miles of West Branch; grandchildren Joshua (Sara) VanWormer, Jenna VanWormer, Michael Beasly, Nolan (Angela) Miles, Chelsea (Joe) Klobucher, and Shayne Miles; 13 great grandchildren; brother Seymour Bortle of Hale, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters Betty Johnson and Sandra Gray.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Zion Church of the Brethren, 3494 E. M-55, Prescott, MI at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Rick Bronke will officiate.
