Carol M. Powell, age 64 of West Branch, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday December 14, 2011 at St. Mary’s of Michigan Medical Center in Saginaw. Carol had lived in West Branch since 1972. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelors Degree in English and earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Central Michigan University. She started teaching in Carlton in 1969, then moved to West Branch in 1972 and began teaching for the West Branch-Rose City Area Schools at Surline Middle School. Carol also taught at Kirtland Community College while teaching at Surline. After retiring, she became an education consultant for Central Michigan University with several northern school districts. She was also principal of the Ogemaw Hills Christian School in West Branch. While at Surline, Carol founded the “Eyes to the Future” program which was nationally recognized and she was honored as Person of the Year in 1995 by the State of Michigan. Carol is survived by her husband John Powell of West Branch, her mother Margaret Gugin of West Branch, sisters, Diane (Fred) Longton of Jackson and Sandra (Clyde) Smith of West Branch and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Gugin. Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Calvary Baptist Church in West Branch. Dale Peters will officiate with burial following at Brookside Cemetery, West Branch. Memorial Contributions may be made to Crisis Pregnancy Center of Ogemaw County, the E.S.P. Scholarship Fund or to the Humane Society of Ogemaw County.
