Carl Ronald Somers

Carl Ronald Somers, age 79 of West Branch, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at his home. Carl was born on March 5, 1939 in Detroit, MI to his loving mother, Mary Helen Somers. He married Rita Mae Whitlock on April 27, 1957 in East Detroit, MI. He enjoyed living in West Branch since 2005, formerly of Detroit and Redford. Carl was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elks #2097 in Redford, and K of C #3577 in Redford. He enjoyed camping, hunting, swimming, being at the beach, and spending time with his family. Carl was a jack of all trades. He was a cabinet maker and even helped make props for the kid’s plays. Carl was a scout leader and Little League coach. Carl drank the first bottle of Orange Crush made at the Red Arrow Bottling Company in downtown Detroit, MI.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Rita M. Somers of West Branch, MI, daughters; DiAnne Somers of West Branch, MI, Wendy (David) Becerra of Wyandotte, MI, Rita (Dale) Hensel of Macomb,MI, Kim (Joe) Brady of Mt. Clemens, MI, sons; Robert “Bob” (Christine Athey) Somers of Hamel, MN, Richard (Nancy) Somers of West Bloomfield, MI, Cal (Robin Smith) Somers of St. Helen, MI, 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and cousin, Helen Arthur of Charlevoix, MI. Also surviving are many loving nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Helen Somers, father, Carl Fredrick Schnueringer, grandchildren, David O. Becerra, Kerry R. Somers, sister, Edith Tange, brother, Johnny Somers, brother, Louis Somers, brother, Robert “Bob” Somers, brother, Donald Somers, and sister, Jennie “Jean” Bayard.

Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin Wednesday, May 30, 2018 from 1-8 PM with Rosary being said at 7:00 PM. Celebration of life Mass will take place on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation at the church will be held 1 hour prior to mass Father Patrick Maher will officiate.
