Burl Wesley Holcomb, known to many as Bud, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 21, 2023, at the age of 94 at his home in West Branch, MI. He was born on April 28, 1929, in Grassy Meadows, WV to John and Emma (Smith) Holcomb.
He lived in the West Branch/Hale area since 1997, formerly of Detroit. Burl was a dedicated husband, father, stepfather, brother-in-law, and cherished member of his extended family.
Throughout his life, Burl had a strong work ethic. He started his career as a teenager, working on a railroad and walking to work, 10 miles each way. He later worked at General Motors for 39 years and also at an auto repair shop in Detroit. Burl was a dedicated member of the Royal Rangers, a youth boys group.
Burl found joy in various hobbies, including cutting the grass, boating, waterskiing on Sage Lake, and spending time at the cabin on Sage Lake.
Burl worshipped at Oak Grove Church, where he found solace and community.
On April 22, 2004, he married Jan Grenier in West Branch.
Burl is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Jan Holcomb, and his children: John (Laura) Holcomb of Westland, MI, Robert (Lisa) Holcomb of Detroit, Patrick Holcomb of West Branch, and Tricha Immonen of Alaska. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Stacey (Ronnie) of TX, April of West Branch, Philip (Kim) of WA, and Randy of West Branch. Burl was a beloved brother-in-law to Frances Holcomb of Elkton, MD. His memory will be cherished by his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Burl was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Holcomb, his first wife of 47 years, Joanna Holcomb, two sons Lewis Holcomb and Glenn Holcomb, and his siblings Vearl Holcomb, Herald Holcomb, and Rita Simms.
Visitation will be held at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch on Thursday, August 24, 2023, starting at 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Paul Klassen will officiate.
A graveside service will be at Mt. Hope Memorial Gardens in Livonia, MI, on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
