Bonnie Lou Schmitt, age 72, passed away Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Lighthouse of Roscommon. Bonnie has lived in St. Helen for over 54 years previously form Bay City, MI. Bonnie was born February 6, 1944 in Bay City to Harold and Dorothy (Matthews) Haberland. She graduated from T.L. Handy High School in Bay City and moved to St. Helen in 1966. She worked for Johnsons IGA in St. Helen where she met her husband Jacob. Bonnie and Jacob owned and operated Welch Lumber, and also owned Glad Rags Clothing in St. Helen in the mid 1970’s. Bonnie got to know many area residents over the years as the Richfield Township Clerk for over 20 years. In her spare time she enjoyed yard work, cooking, baking, traveling, helping others and volunteering at the many community events, two of her favorites were the area fireworks, and Bluegill festival. She also belonged to the American Legion Aux. post 416 in St. Helen, was a Lioness, and Cub Scout leader for many years.
Bonnie is survived by her daughter Amy Schmitt of St. Helen; Half Brother Clifford (Janet) Haberland of Beaverton; “grandchildren” Madison, Molly and Joey; her beloved dog Millie; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and her estranged brother William (Kay) Haberland of Burton. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Jacob, son Peter, and her brother Donald.
Visitation for Bonnie will begin Monday, November 7, 2016 from 12-9PM at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in St. Helen, MI. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM the Hope Lutheran Church in St. Helen with visitation from 10-11AM at the church. Pastor Rodney Morrison will officiate with burial following at the Fairview Cemetery in St. Helen.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family; those memorials will be used locally to benefit the St. Helen Area.
