Bettye J. Smith, age 76 of Rose City, passed away Monday, October 13, 2008 at West Branch Regional Medical Center. She had lived in Rose City since 1953. Bettye was born on July 20, 1932 in Tennessee and married George Smith Jr. on June 2, 1951 in Lincoln Park. She worked as a secretary for Refrigeration News in Detroit then as a secretary for the DNR – Law Division in the Mio office. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #6468 and the Trinity United Methodist Church of Rose City. At the time of her retirement, Bettye worked at the Rifle River Recreation Area as a secretary for the parks division. After retirement in 1992, she was a council person, representing Ward 2 in Rose City. Bettye was active on several committees including finance, police and parks until the time of her death. She gave generously to city organizations and the Methodist Church. Bettye is survived by her husband George of Rose City, children, Susan Smith and Jay (Toni) Smith. She was preceded in death by her son Gregory Alan Smith and her mother, Pauline Padden. Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in Rose City will begin on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. Donald Wojewski will officiate with burial following at Lane Heights Cemetery, Lupton. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
