Betsy Carr (Guthrie) Greenland, lovingly known as Sue or Susie, died peacefully at the age of 87, on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Henry Ford Medical Hospital, Macomb County, MI with her four loving children at her bedside. Sue, originally from Detroit, MI was a nursing school graduate working as an RN in the Detroit area in the mid 40's to early 50's until she married Edward V. Greenland on May 14, 1955. Sue and Ed lived in Dearborn, MI until moving to West Branch, MI in 1966. Mother of seven children, Sue mourned the untimely death of three of her children, Edward Gerard 1964, John Joseph 1981 and Paul Michael 1997. While in West Branch, Sue raised her children, worked as a home health nurse, visiting health care provider and visiting Eucharistic minister to the sick, elderly and homebound. She provided home education to her youngest child, Anne. A devout Catholic, Sue was a daily Mass attendee, and organized parish Eucharistic Adoration and Rosary. Sue cared for her mother, "Granny" and her husband, Edward respectively in her own home and provided end of life care for both. Edward died at Bortz Nursing Home, West Branch, MI in 2007. Following her husband's death, Sue resided at Victorian Trails Apartment, West Branch until her subsequent moves to Jackson, MI and ultimately Clinton Township, MI earlier this year.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Jean M. Guthrie and Robert Findley Guthrie I, brother, Robert Findley Guthrie II, husband, Edward Vincent and 3 children, Edward Gerard, John Joseph and Paul Michael. She is survived by 4 children, Robert Anthony, James Charles and wife Brenda Lee (Parliament), Jean Elizabeth, and Anne Mary (Greenland) Osborn and husband, Darrell. Grandchildren include, Cristy Anne, Eric Alan, Courtney Renee, Shelby Dakota, Ashlen Paige, Breanna Rae, and two Great Grandchildren, Henry James and Jacob Lee.
Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Rosary will be held at 3:00 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church will be Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Father Patrick Maher will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Education Fund of St. Joseph School.
