Albert Fred Tews was born April 12, 1914 in Wheaton Illinois. He was one of ten children from German immigrant parents. Al (The Bear) Tews passed away, at his home, Thursday, November 20, 2008. During his 94 years, Big Al (as he was also known) enjoyed the company of all whom he met. If you knew, or spent time with Al, you were likely to have heard many stories about his life’s adventures. After a 30 year career, Al retired from Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in 1975 to spend the remainder of his years traveling between his residences in Alger, Michigan and Amargosa Valley, Nevada. “The Bear” was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener, and world traveler. He took special joy in spending time with his family. Albert Tews was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Tews (Johnson), his daughter Peggy Howard (Tews), his brothers (Carl, Edward, George, Harry, Herman, Luke, Paul, and William). Surviving siblings are Richard Tews of Spooner, Wisconsin and Dorothy Houston of Belvidere, Illinois. He is also survived by Daughters Doris Bagby-Wood, of Amargosa Valley, Nevada and Donna Scheidegger, of Alger, Michigan. Al is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and countless friends in all 50 states, and 3 continents. Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home, in West Branch, Michigan will begin on Sunday, November 23, 2008 from 2-9 p.m. and Monday, November 24, 2008 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. A funeral service, officiated by Douglas Weible of New Beginnings will be held at 1:30, Monday, directly following visitation. Burial at Alger Cemetery, and a graveside service will be conducted after the funeral home service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or New Beginnings Lutheran Church of West Branch, Michigan.
