John Leonard Berner

John Leonard Berner, age 73, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at his home in West Branch, MI. He was born on July 24, 1949 in Wyandotte, MI to Theodore and Rosemary (Sommers) Berner.

John lived in West Branch since 2000 formerly of Roscommon, MI. He married Helen Woody in Detroit on August 29, 1970.

John served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post #103 and Calvary Baptist Church in West Branch. John served in the Ogemaw County Veteran Honor Guard, helped with poppy sales, and placed flags at the veteran’s graves in cemeteries in Ogemaw County. He did a lot of researching of veterans in our county. He also held various positions at the American Legion throughout the years.

John enjoyed building, reading, researching, playing Pokémon Go, and doing things with his hands. He was very proud of serving his country.

John is survived by his loving wife of almost 52 years, Helen Berner; daughters, Hope (Ted) Serviss, Faith (Michael) Edwards, Love Smith, Joanne (Rick) Samborn, and Angela Berner; 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother William, and sister Doris.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at the Calvary Baptist Church in West Branch at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service with veteran honors will follow at the Calvary Baptist Cemetery. Pastor Tom Teall will officiate.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Calvary Baptist Church and Christian Academy.
